A pathway linking liver fat and arterial stiffness - direct as well as indirect effects

چکیده
Background Although the association of triglycerides (TG) with cardiovascular disease has been debated, accumulating evidence suggests that hypertriglyceridaemia may independently indicate an increased risk of atherosclerotic disease. A subclinical impairment of aortic elastic properties often precedes overt atherosclerotic disease and predicts the corresponding risk. Circulating TG levels are dictated not only by dietary intake but also by hepatic TG production, a process that is elevated in hepatic steatosis. This suggests that hepatic steatosis has indirect effects on vascular stiffness acting through increasing blood TG levels. Using the combination of flow imaging, H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and serum TG level, we investigated the relationship between hepatic fat content, circulating TG levels and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) in obesity.

Investigating a Liver Fat: Arterial Stiffening Pathway in Adult and Childhood Obesity.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between hepatic fat content, circulating triglyceride levels and aortic stiffness in adult and childhood obesity. APPROACH AND RESULTS Seventy-seven adults and 18 children across a wide range of body mass index (18.5-52.6 kg/m(2); percentile 8-100) with no identifiable cardiac risk factors underwent; 1H- magnetic resonance spectroscopy to quantify hep...
متن کاملBody compositional and cardiometabolic effects of testosterone therapy in obese men with severe obstructive sleep apnea: a randomized placebo-controlled trial.
BACKGROUND The combination of male gender, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity magnifies cardiometabolic risk. There has been no systematic study evaluating whether testosterone therapy can improve cardiometabolic health in obese men with OSA by improving body composition, visceral abdominal fat and insulin sensitivity. OBJECTIVE To assess body compositional and cardiometabolic effects...
متن کاملArterial Stiffness and its Correlation with the Extent of Coronary Artery Disease
Introduction: Coronary artery disease secondary to atherosclerosis is the most common cause of mortality. Coronary angiography is the most precise method for determining the extent of disease in the coronary vascular bed. Arterial stiffness has been proposed as a marker of atherosclerosis in some studies. One of the noninvasive methods for the determination of arterial stiffness is Doppler echo...
متن کاملInhibition of 5-Lipoxygenase inhibitor zileuton in high-fat diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease progression model
Objective(s): Arachidonic Acid/5-lipoxygenase (AA/5-LOX) pathway connects lipid metabolism and proinflammatory cytokine, which are both related to the development and progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the role of AA/5-LOX pathway in progression of NAFLD, and the effect of zileuton, an inhibitor of 5-LOX, in this mod...
متن کاملTrans-chalcone enhances insulin sensitivity through the miR-34a/SIRT1 pathway
Objective(s): Trans-chalcone as the parent member of the chalcone series reduces circulating levels of insulin and glucose. However, the cellular mechanism of these effects is poorly understood. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) as a direct target of miR-34a controls homeostasis of glucose, and also improves insulin sensitivity. Therefore, the present study for the first time investigated the influence of tran...
